the “demo push” effect

Topic: general| No Comments »

Bill Higgins over at IBM-Eclipse writes -

So using a publicly visible demo is useful not just for showing off fancy new features, but also to drive tough issues to closure.

Sweet. Exactly what I wanted to read before my Sprint demo tomorrow. And we have had same impact about achieving closures.

The “demo push” is really *the* driving factor in the super-high productivity of my team. The high we get from watching other folks’ eyes widen from all the code written in a 30-day iteration is worth it. Not to mention the anticipation of getting drunk after the demo….

easy does it

Actually, Eclipse did not launch yet. If failed. Apparently the OSX drop from eclipse.org is bogus. It fails on my OSX with some crap about missing jni path. Ugh!

Well, fear not! Thanks to this blog entry, I found EasyEclipse. There is a nice selection of Eclipse bundles in there. I picked my favorite bundle…and the installation was a breeze. Now, why can’t IBM/Eclipse do the same?

And yes, now Eclipse is done launching.

emacs

Ever since I got my MBP, I’ve been trying to re-learn emacs. The last time I used it (or vi) was back in school in Clemson. 8 yrs ago. So, I knew it was going to be quite a learning curve. And I tried. For a week. Ctrl-x Ctrl-f, Ctrl-x Ctrl-s, Ctrl-x b. Ok. What is the command to find something? Ctrl-s. Oh I thought that was to save. No Ctrl-x Ctrl-s is to save, Ctrl-s by itself is to find. Ah. I see.

Actually I don’t.

While I am an avid user of keyboard shortcuts, I am not a fanatic as this guy -

So it’s not an editor for the faint of heart, and this blog is targeted at people who have already made the commitment, and want to improve their mastery of this elegant, timeless piece of software.

The rest of you: I think your Eclipse just finished launching, so you can get back to work now.

The past 8 years of Visual Studio-JEdit-Eclipse see-it-all experience has perhaps made me faint at heart. Perhaps I like to see all my project files (yeah “buffers”, whatever) in a single view, like the fact that all I can switch to a different file without alt-tabbing, like to debug in the same app, like to know that Ctrl-s is to save and Ctrl-f is to find, like to know….

Ok folks, I admit it. I am an IDE-junkie. And my Eclipse has just finished launching - so back to code.

Donald Rumsfeld briefed the President this morning. He told Bush that 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq.

To everyone’s amazement, all of the color ran from Bush’s face, then he collapsed onto his desk, head in hands, visibly shaken, almost whimpering.

Finally, he composed himself and asked Rumsfeld, “Just exactly how many is a brazillion?

Here are two guys that met online. Chatted a bit. Figured they had they similar itches. Decided to scratch it. 15tags is born. I am not sure they have met each other in person yet. But that is not the cool part. What is cool is that they are going to show the world “the birth and growth” of their app.

This is taking blogging into a whole new level. I wish them the best.

the great immigration conundrumTM

I recently read Paul Graham’s essay on “Why Startups Condense in America“. Interesting hypothesis - although I am not sure if he was addressing American grad students on why they should found startups or other governments on why they should try to recreate Silicon Valley. But thats a debate for another day.

So what is the Great Immigration ConundrumTM and what does Graham’s essay got to do with it? Let me explain by answering these two questions.

1. Why do Indians (and other immigrants) do well in high-tech America, specifically in Silicon Valley ?

Graham says

Certainly if I had to choose between bad high schools and good universities, like the US, and good high schools and bad universities, like most other industrialized countries, I’d take the US system. Better to make everyone feel like a late bloomer than a failed child prodigy.

India has an excellent school system - education in English with focus on science and math. Most high-school students already know what they want a career in (although this is a negative - static typing - according to Graham). Unfortunately, when they enter college, they are in for a rude shock. Most Indian colleges (universites) are lacking. There is a dearth of basic infrastructure - like a reliable internet connection. Professors (lecturers as they are called) are mostly clueless (they just graduated from college) and desperately need research experience to provide quality education. Oh, needless to say, grad school is a joke.

So the smart and ambitious students realize that and choose to come to America for college and grad school. And, as we all know (and as Graham points out) American universities are waaay better. These students endup getting the best of both worlds - good schools and good universities.

And thats why Indians (and other immigrants) do well in high-tech America, specifically in Silicon Valley.

2. Why do Indians (and other immigrants) don’t do well in high-tech America, specifically in Silicon Valley ?

In the part about immigration, Graham says

Like a company whose software runs on Windows, those in the current Silicon Valley are all too aware of the shortcomings of the INS, but there’s little they can do about it. They’re hostages of the platform.

The Indian students that come to America, and get a solid university education, are in for a rude shock. No, not that Corporate America is running on Windoze. Its that INS is running Corporate America.

If the Indian student has a brilliant idea in her thesis and wants to found a startup around that idea, she can’t. INS will not allow it. You must have a greencard to do that. And how do you get a greencard? By working for big companies for 8+ years. And what happens to that student’s entrepreneurial flame in those 8 years. It dies.

Look around Silicon Valley. How many companies are founded by Indians. Only a handful. How many in the top web 2.0 startups? None. Thats a pity when there are hundreds of thousands of Indians living in America. The entrepreneurial spirit is most of them is long gone and they seem to have been convinced that the “American Dream” is to move to suburbia, buy a house with a big yard and make offsprings. And work for these companies. Companies that were founded by somebody else. Someone that is a citizen.

Yes, folks. In the current system, the immigrants will always be 2nd-class citizens. Taxation without Representation in Silicon Valley.

And thats why Indians (and other immigrants) don’t do well in high-tech America, specifically in Silicon Valley.

Coming to America? Think again. About the Great Immigration ConundrumTM

I finally got around upgrading wordpress. From v1.2 to 2.03 - My first upgrade in 2 years! I decided to delete all comments - about 90% of them was spam anyway. While I was at it, I got inspired to update the theme as well. Let me know what you think.

Oh yes, the photo at the top was taken by me ;-) It is in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Pkwy in Virginia. Here is the large format.
