Basher, Hippie or Nerd?

Topic: code, general| 2 Comments »

In a recent Slashdot thread about “Taking you coding skills to the next level“, I found this comment about the three categories of developers-

  1. Bashers - these are people who bash out endless lines of cobol (probably VB nowadays) with no real feel for the craft
  2. Hippies - Hippies write good code badly. Once the problem of how to code this task is resolved they lose interest so the actual transformation of the concept to the written code is poorly executed
  3. Nerds - Nerds write bad code very well. Nerds become obsessed with particular techniques and will use that technique whether it is relevant or not. However their attention to detail means that the code is well executed

I think these categories apply to any profession. Its more a personality trait.

What am I? I used to be a Nerd. Now matured into a Hippie.

sspu I am a huge fan of the upstart band Silversun Pickups. Their debut record Carnavas is unbelievably catchy. I have been wanting to see them live for a few months now. Well, this past week, I was among the lucky few to get into the Rickshaw Stop to see SSPU live [If I couldn't get in, I was willing to drive 200 miles to Visalia the following day for their next show].

And what an incredible performance! They are amazing. Their talent is only matched by their down-to-earth attitude. They were pretty shy on stage and very honest - when the crowd requested the song “Three Seed”, the vocalist admitted they have not practised it BUT they will try to play it anyway. How refreshing!

If you can believe it, I am an even bigger fan now!

Get their record Carnavas NOW. And if they happen to play near you, do yourself a favour and go watch them.
